MAS Newsletter 2/2017: A New Research Program and Many New Faces

This edition features our Commencement 2017 and an introduction and welcome of our visiting scholar James Strasburg. We also report about the HCA’s newest research program, the Graduiertenkolleg “Authority and Trust in American Culture, Society, History and Politics,” which was approved late last year by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Admission

Thank you for your interest in the newly designed four-semester M.A. program.

Applications for the winter term 2018/19 will be accepted from May 16 to June 30, 2018 via Heidelberg University's online application system. Until further notice, acceptance is subject to final approval of the Examination and Study Regulations (Prüfungs- und Studienordnung) by the governing bodies of Heidelberg University.

Students are admitted to the program at the beginning of each winter semester (October). Starting in 2019, applications will be accepted from February 1 to March 15 each year.

Requirements:

The MAS is a four-semester program taught in English targeting German and international students holding an above-average B.A. in American Studies and/or from fields represented in the program. Admission is competitive and dependent on the academic merits of the candidates and the quality of their application. The HCA admits up to 20 students to the MAS every year.

  • Applicants need at least 180 ECTS credits to qualify.
  • Applicants who hold degrees from recognized academic institutions outside of the EU should have successfully completed degree programs of a minimum of three years of study.
  • If you do not hold either a high school diploma or a degree from an institution of higher education in an English-speaking country (Australia, Canada, Ireland, Malta, New Zealand, UK, USA), you must prove your English language proficiency through a TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate.

Applications are ranked according to the following criteria:

  • Final grade (BA), 70%
  • BA thesis, 15%
  • Language proficiency test, 15%
