The disruptive policies of the Trump Administration challenge post-1945 US foreign policy traditions, as Washington redefines its foreign policy premises, alliances, and the global institutional architecture. Most analysts focus on the personality, preferences, and leadership style of President Trump as well as the “America First” ideology of the MAGA movement to make sense of these developments. In short, they try to explain US foreign policy “inside out” and tend to reject current policies as seemingly irrational and strategically inept. While Donald Trump may be an enabler and accelerator of policy change, he is neither the cause of it nor will his administration necessarily deal the death blow to American power and a US-dominated global order. The talk seeks to explore and assess the strategic foundations of current US world re-ordering as well as the future of US power in the 21st century.
