MASNEWS 1/2018: A Heartfelt Farewell and a Wholehearted Welcome

This edition of the newsletter is remarkable as it reports a considerable change at the HCA. Founding Director Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Detlef Junker has retired after 15 years at the head of the HCA, and I am honored to follow in his footsteps. It is my pleasure as his successor to present this first newsletter of the year. In the following pages you will find Prof. Junker’s farewell speech and a short interview with him in which he looks back on his successful tenure at the HCA.

We report about the excursion of our MAS class of 2019 to the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart and give the floor to two of our alumnae: Cen Jiang and Fei Ye tell us where their professional lives have led them after graduating from the MAS.

Thank you for your interest in the newly designed four-semester M.A. program.

Applications for the winter term 2018/19 were accepted from May 16 to June 30, 2018 via Heidelberg University's online application system.

Students are admitted to the program at the beginning of each winter semester (October). Starting in 2019, applications will be accepted from February 1 to March 15 each year.

The MAS is a four-semester program taught in English targeting German and international students holding an above-average B.A. in American Studies and/or from fields represented in the program. Admission is competitive and dependent on the academic merits of the candidates and the quality of their application. The HCA admits up to 20 students to the MAS every year.

  • Applicants need at least 180 ECTS credits to qualify.
  • Applicants who hold degrees from recognized academic institutions outside of the EU should have successfully completed degree programs of a minimum of three years of study.
  • If you do not hold either a high school diploma or a degree from an institution of higher education in an English-speaking country (Australia, Canada, Ireland, Malta, New Zealand, UK, USA), you must prove your English language proficiency through a TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate.

Applications are ranked according to the following criteria:

  • Final grade (BA), 70%
  • BA thesis, 15%
  • Language proficiency test, 15%
