Amid the rise of global authoritarianism, the contemporary novel is obsessed with the question sounded by C.A. Davids in the title of her 2022 novel, How to Be a Revolutionary? Much contemporary U.S. fiction responds to this problem, seeking to recreate the space of collective struggle amid the erosion of democratic norms, in the process redefining the very sense of an “America” entangled with global histories of autocracy. Reading a range of contemporary novels that return to the moment of decolonization in order to excavate the afterlives of colonialism, the Cold War, and the War on Terror, this talk considers their relation to history as a kind of late style, exploring what this desire to salvage revolutionary politics in an era marked by crisis and catastrophe portends for the possibility of revolutionary thinking today.
